K9 Merit was a detective for Cumberland County, PA
Written by Merit's handler Terri Heck:
I remember years ago - there I was with Merit (most intelligent bloodhound I ever met) in a room at an assisted living center. All the residents in this area were in Geri-chairs - very difficult to move them from the tight circle. I could have done a demo with a staff member but I had a thought - but would Merit be able to do it? I had a staff member remove the shoe of one of the residents. And Merit worked that circle until she gently put a paw up on the resident missing her shoe.
Merit was amazing as you know. She, in play, learned to target on objects. You could line up a ball, a stuffy and her favorite toy - a bowling pin. I could say ball and she would paw the ball and so on... She knew them all and was consistent. Later, in her career, she was taught to target on weapons and ammunition. with the command "Trace" she would alert well on her targets. She found items in a few actual cases - a firearm and shells!
In play she would to tunnels, drive the steering wheel, do the slide, double tunnel - whatever you asked her to do. Every day she lived her life with exuberance - solving crime - finding the missing - and touching lives loving everyone she met. But the playful intelligent side of her was amazing as well.
And God Bless her she made it to 13 so I could have her as long as possible!
